is located in the sand hill region of North Central Nebraska and has been the
county seat of Holt County since 1877. U.S.
Highways 281, 20 and 275 serve the community.
O誰eill is 122 miles west of Sioux City, Iowa and 187 miles northwest
of Omaha, Nebraska. O誰eill is
the largest community in North Central Nebraska. Approximately 20,500 people reside in O誰eill and the surrounding
counties utilizing its many services. The
population of O誰eill is 3,852 and Holt County is 12,163.
Basic economic activities include ranching, potato and grain farming,
government, tourism and retail sales.

O誰eill
is nestled amid the rolling bluffs of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers, the famous
sand hills of Central Nebraska which provide fragrant pine forests, and vast prairies
and grasslands. The area provides
an endless variety, from historic sites like the Ashfall Fossil Beds, where
fossilized remains of mammals who died after massive volcanic eruption 10
million years ago, to outdoor recreation areas. There are excellent opportunities for boating, fishing,
camping and hiking. Both residents
and visitors alike find a place to explore in this timeless region.
The
community is served by the Northeastern Community College; two High Schools,
O誰eill Public School and St. Mary痴 High School; three Elementary Schools,
O誰eill Grade School, St. Mary痴 Elementary and Word of Life Christian
Center.
